Summary of Program Litigation
What should current tenants do?
The Advantage NY Program was a rent subsidy program designed to provide short term rental assistance to persons residing in shelter to help them secure permanent housing. The program was originally designed to last one to two years but was terminated earlier due to State and Local funding cuts. The last Advantage NY leases were signed on March 14, 2011 and the City moved to end payments to current tenants as of April 1, 2011 but, Legal Aid filed a lawsuit on behalf of those tenants arguing that the City was responsible for paying rents for those already enrolled in program. The lawsuit was unsuccessful and the last rent payments sent out by the City were for the month of January 2012. Tenants are now solely responsible for any rent owed from February 2012 to present.
