new york 1983 bottle return: 5¢ – new york 2012 bottle return: 5¢. or: how not to encourage recycling.

Sure We Can

In New York State, the 1983 Bottle Bill encourages recycling by allowing people to return their cans and bottles for $0.05 each. This law allows some among the homeless, particularly in New York City, to scrape together a living – albeit, a meager one – by collecting and redeeming others’ discarded cans and bottles. (This work has come to be known as “canning.”)
